Our Autumn Skincare Routine Guide
Now the season has switched from summer to autumn, we’re looking closely at our skincare routine to see if we need to make a few tweaks and upgrades.
After months of summer sun, trips to different countries and humidity, autumn arrives with cooler temperatures, drier air and indoor heating that can leave our skin feeling tight, dry or extra sensitive, and not to mention confused at the changes!
If you’re noticing a change in your skin in September through to October, then you’re not alone or imagining it. In this guide we’ll share our tips for transitioning from a summer to autumn skincare routine and our top products to keep your skin balanced, hydrated and glowing all season long.
Why Autumn affects your skin
For the most of us, the summer brings in high humidity which helps our skin retain more moisture. Whereas when autumn rolls in, the environment changes quickly to cooler air, less humidity and our indoor heating kicks in to make the air even drier. Add to that any lingering sun damage from our summer holidays, and your skin needs a total rescue remedy.
What you’ll spot in your skin is dryness or flakiness, sometimes redness and sensitivity are the first signs your skin needs extra help in the autumn months.

How to transition to an autumn skincare routine
In a nutshell, it’s hydrate, protect and be gentle with you skin! Try these autumn skincare tips:
- Switch to a nourishing cleanser. If you’ve been using one with high actives or a foam wash that can be dehydrating, now is the time to try something that is creamier or oil-based. The aim is to cleanse your skin without stripping away natural oils that your skin needs.
- Add richer layers of moisture. Perhaps a lightweight gel-based moisturiser was great for your summer skin, but now is it time to try something creamier that’s going to prevent transepidermal water loss. Spot products which have ceramides, shea butter or fatty acids to strengthen your skin barrier. A hyaluronic acid serum is great to add in here too, boosting overall hydration levels.
- Exfoliate with care. It’s still fine to exfoliate your skin and it actually helps to keep on top of cell turnover but overdoing it can cause skin to become drier. Stick to gentler options and cut back to once or twice a week.
- Keep SPF in your routine. Cloudy and rainy days may be here, but this is not the time to ditch your SPF. UV rays are present all year round and while they may not burn your skin in the colder months, they work on the lower levels of your skin, causing more long-term damage.
- Introduce more calming ingredients. Because the cooler weather can make your skin more reactive, ingredients like niacinamide, oat extract and ceramides are great for soothing the skin.
